Bitget, Liquid exploits push Q3 crypto hacks toward $1.2BAccording to Hacken, Q3 2026 crypto hacks totaled $1.18 billion across 107 incidents—the worst quarter since Q1 2025—with about 77% ($906 million) tied to compromised suppliers, developer tools, undeployed fixes, or infrastructure outside audits. The largest incidents were the $387 million Bitget hack, the $320 million Liquid Network exploit, the $120 million Tectonic exploit, and a Coldcard firmware vulnerability linked to roughly $115 million in losses, while smart-contract incidents were the most frequent attack vector. Of the gross losses, about $387 million was returned or reversed and operators covered another $410 million, leaving roughly $384 million (32%) neither returned nor covered, prompting Hacken to urge stronger third-party and privileged-infrastructure security and broader audits.

Australia seeks feedback on crypto platform rules ahead of 2027 rolloutAustralia’s securities regulator, ASIC, has opened consultation on proposed capital, custody, and trading standards for crypto platforms under digital asset legislation passed in April, ahead of a 2027 rollout. The proposals include three alternative capital models, restrictions on proprietary trading, quarterly reporting of customer-asset wallets, and permission for offshore custody with safeguards if an overseas parent fails. Industry participants largely welcomed the clarity, though some noted the rules could test existing trading and compliance models; feedback is due Nov. 27, with final standards expected in March 2027 and the law taking effect April 8, 2027.

EU authority classifies Circle’s USDC as ‘significant’ under MiCAThe European Banking Authority has classified Circle’s USDC as a “significant” e-money token under MiCA, meaning the $73 billion stablecoin—the second-largest by market cap—will be jointly overseen by the EBA and France’s ACPR. The designation comes as EU-based issuers push for regulated dollar-pegged stablecoins to support cross-border payments, arguing that euro-only options are insufficient. Meanwhile, the ECB continues to explore a potential digital euro, with a possible issuance in 2029 after legislation and pilot programs.

‘Bunker mode’ won’t protect your crypto, critics sayEthereum researcher Justin Drake warns that AI could help attackers break elliptic-curve cryptography, and he suggests “bunker mode” planning to migrate crypto to fresh addresses. Critics say that is not a practical defense, because exposed extended public keys, spent Bitcoin keys in the mempool, and broader blockchain infrastructure could still leave funds vulnerable. Experts also note there is no working attack on ECDSA and no evidence its core assumptions have weakened, so rushing to move funds could cause costly mistakes. Some chains are exploring quantum-safe signatures and recovery plans, but critics call Drake’s warning premature and say it doubles as a pitch for Ethereum’s post-quantum roadmap.
