Solana’s Alpenglow launches on mainnet, targets 99% faster finality

Solana’s first major consensus upgrade, Alpenglow, has launched on mainnet, aiming to cut transaction finality by 99% from roughly 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. Its first phase, Votor, replaces the existing voting and finalization mechanism with direct validator voting and a certificate-based system, while a later phase will introduce Rotor to replace Turbine. The upgrade is intended to enable near-immediate settlement and more responsive applications, and it coincided with a nearly 3% rise in SOL over the 24 hours before launch.

American Bankers Association: OCC’s GENIUS rules ‘undermine’ US Congress

The American Bankers Association is pushing back on the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s finalized rules implementing the GENIUS Act, arguing that the regulator’s removal of a proposed presumption against certain third-party yield arrangements undermines Congress’ intent and lets stablecoin issuers offer economically equivalent yield while technically avoiding the statutory ban. The ABA’s criticism was largely echoed by the Bank Policy Institute, which warned the change creates ambiguity and risks deposit flight, while the Blockchain Association supported the OCC’s approach as more closely aligned with the statute. The OCC finalized the rules ahead of the GENIUS Act’s January 2027 implementation, with additional guidance expected from the Federal Reserve and Treasury.

SoFi unveils bank-issued tokenized deposit for yield-bearing crypto funds

SoFi Bank has launched SoFi Earn (SOFIE), a tokenized bank deposit paying a variable 4.40% APY with no minimum balance and FDIC coverage up to $250,000 per depositor. Each SOFIE represents $1 deposited at SoFi Bank and can be converted one-for-one into SoFiUSD, the bank’s dollar-pegged stablecoin, for crypto purchases or external wallet transfers, though SoFiUSD itself is not FDIC-insured. The product is rolling out to SoFi Crypto members through November, following new federal stablecoin rulemaking.

The UK needs a workable route to regulated DeFi access

Katie Harries, Coinbase’s European policy head, warns that the UK’s 2027 crypto rules risk a de facto ban on regulated firms offering access to DeFi. The FCA’s proposed requirement that customer orders be executed only on authorized venues does not fit decentralized protocols, which have no legal person who can become authorized.

Harries argues the UK should allow responsible DeFi integration through regulated gateways, with clear consumer disclosures and firm accountability, rather than exclusion. She notes that the EU and US are exploring regulated DeFi access and warns the UK could fall behind in tokenized capital markets if it closes off decentralized infrastructure.
