BlackRock files for third Bitcoin ETF, still no Solana or XRPBlackRock has filed a preliminary prospectus with the SEC for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT), a third Bitcoin ETF that would use options linked to its iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) to seek limited downside protection in exchange for capped gains. The proposed fund would use three overlapping options tranches, each initially targeting about 10% maximum loss exposure to the Bitcoin-linked asset before fees, though BlackRock warns it does not guarantee a fixed floor or cap. While BlackRock continues to expand its crypto ETF lineup—already including two Bitcoin and two Ether funds—it still has not launched US spot ETFs for other cryptocurrencies such as Solana or XRP, prompting questions from ETF analysts.

Mt. Gox pushes creditor repayment deadline to 2027 in sixth extensionMt. Gox has again extended its creditor repayment deadline, pushing it to Oct. 31, 2027—the sixth extension since 2023—after the Tokyo District Court approved moving the date from Oct. 31, 2026 for base, early lump-sum and intermediate payments. Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said repayments were largely complete for creditors who finished procedures without complications, but many remain unpaid due to incomplete procedures or processing issues. Mt. Gox began repaying in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash in July 2024 and said in March 2025 that over 19,500 creditors had been repaid, while the latest notice did not say how many creditors or how much Bitcoin remains to be distributed; wallets tied to Mt. Gox still hold about 34,400 BTC, worth roughly $2.8 billion.

Market participants weigh in on SEC’s proposed crypto regulationsThe SEC is preparing to close public comments on its proposed “Regulation Crypto Assets,” rules introduced in August to create a clear framework for certain crypto investment contracts after Congress failed to pass broader digital asset legislation. During the 60-day comment period, the agency received about 140 responses, including support from the MiCA Crypto Alliance—which recommended clearer crypto-specific definitions and disclosure requirements—and SkyBridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci, while six people commented anonymously. While many praised or engaged with the proposal, some legal experts warn the SEC’s rules could be overturned more easily than an act of Congress, and both the SEC and CFTC remain understaffed at the leadership level.

Made an ‘honest’ mistake with crypto taxes? New bill offers way outA proposed US bill, the Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act (H.R. 10357), would create a Digital Asset Voluntary Disclosure Program within 12 months of becoming law. Under Section 502, crypto investors who made past reporting mistakes could file amended returns and pay what they owe, plus interest and a reduced, predictable penalty. The House Ways and Means Committee approved it 38-5 in September, but it still needs to pass the House and Senate and be signed by the president. The program targets ordinary investors who made “honest mistakes,” not willful evaders—an issue the IRS’s existing voluntary disclosure practice doesn’t address well. Taxpayers certifying their errors were non-willful would face 0% penalties on the first $25,000 of tax deficiency per year and 5% above that if they file within the first year. The need is clear: one 2026 report found only 49% of crypto users knew selling crypto can be a taxable event.
