Standard Chartered analysts warn that stablecoins are a meaningful competitive threat to bank deposits, with the delayed US CLARITY Act (which would ban interest on stablecoin holdings) underscoring the risk. An analyst at the institution estimates US bank deposits could fall by roughly one-third of the US dollar stablecoin market cap (about $301.4B), as stablecoin adoption pulls money out of traditional deposit accounts and compresses banks' net interest margin revenue.

Tether introduces USAt under new US stablecoin rules

Tether has officially launched USAt, a US dollar–pegged stablecoin designed specifically for the US market and to operate under the federal payment-stablecoin framework created by the GENIUS Act (July 2025). USAt debuts as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with an initial $10 million supply and is rolling out via listings on platforms including Bybit, Crypto.com, Kraken, OKX and MoonPay, with Tether framing it as a federally regulated, dollar-backed product.

US stablecoin legislation (the GENIUS Act) would act as a counterweight with stablecoin issuers acting as major Treasury buyers required reserves in dollars and Treasurys, tightening the link between stablecoin growth and Treasury-market liquidity.
