Altcoin season never really arrived in 2025, but a few tokens refused to follow the script. While Bitcoin ended the year about 7% off its highs and the broader altcoin market lost more than 46% of its value, XRP, Zcash and Algorand still managed to outperform in a rough backdrop. XRP leaned on something most rivals still do not have: regulatory clarity. Zcash tapped into a quiet resurgence in privacy demand. Algorand found oxygen in tokenization and real-world pilots.

Now, these did not trade like meme rockets. They traded like selective risk in a year when most capital stuck to BTC, stablecoins and regulated ETFs.

Strategy Caps a Heavy Year of BTC Buying

Strategy did not sit out this cycle; it leaned in.

The latest buy — 1,229 Bitcoin — pushes its holdings to 672,497 BTC after a year with more disclosed purchases than the previous two years combined. The new clip is small next to earlier multibillion-dollar waves, but the stack it sits on is what matters.

At this point, Strategy's balance sheet is a concentrated statement that the market is still mispricing long-term BTC scarcity, even after a choppy 2025.

That makes the bet very simple and very unforgiving.

If the thesis is right, the company has front-run a decade of adoption. If it is wrong, one of the most visible corporate treasuries in the world has tied its fate to an asset that can still move violently when liquidity thins out.

BlackRock's BUIDL Shows Tokenization at Real Scale

BlackRock's USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund has now paid out $100 million in dividends from tokenized Treasury yields, turning "onchain money markets" into an actual cash-flowing product. Securitize, which runs issuance and onboarding, says BUIDL is a live test of what happens when traditional money market risk moves onto public rails instead of staying buried in legacy systems.

Can Zcash Really Run to $1K? Arthur Hayes Thinks So

Arthur Hayes is putting Zcash back on the radar. In a recent interview, the former BitMEX CEO floated a "first stop" target of $1,000 for ZEC, tying the move to how he expects liquidity to creep back into markets in 2026. He argues that even without a formal "QE" label from the Fed, new liquidity tools can still push risk higher — and that privacy coins like Zcash are one of the more leveraged ways to express that view.
