US Senate passes housing bill with CBDC ban until 2030

The US Senate voted 85-5 to pass the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, a major housing affordability bill that also includes a temporary ban on the Federal Reserve creating or working on a central bank digital currency until 2030. The CBDC clause would bar the Fed from directly or indirectly issuing or creating a CBDC, or a substantially similar digital asset, while carving out stablecoins and other open, permissionless, private dollar-denominated currencies. The bill now heads to the House, where it is expected to move quickly after House and Senate leaders reached a deal last week. Even after the ban expires, the Fed would still need explicit congressional authorization before moving forward with a CBDC, making the measure a major win for anti-CBDC lawmakers and crypto advocates.

Ripple gains preliminary MiCA license ahead of July 1 EU deadline

Ripple said Luxembourg’s financial regulator granted it preliminary approval for a crypto asset service provider license under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. Once finalized, the CASP license would let Ripple offer regulated crypto services to banks, fintechs and other businesses across all 30 European Economic Area countries through a single regulatory passport.
