AI has staked its claim as a venture capital magnet, as buzzy startups mature in an industry that is transforming and automating work across fields like engineering, healthcare, sales and beyond. As Forbes debuts its seventh annual AI 50 list, produced in partnership with Sequoia and Meritech Capital, we aim to spotlight the most exciting privately-held AI companies in the world. Take Cursor, among the hottest apps in the market. Founded in 2022, the coding tool from parent company Anysphere helps engineers and companies edit code using everyday language. Think: "Make me an 8-bit side scroller video game" or "build me a weather app." Such a tool could turn the market for automated coding and engineering upside down. Forbes' Rashi Shrivastava and Katharine Schwab also profiled entrepreneur May Habib, whose AI company Writer sells a Swiss Army knife suite of tools that aims to expedite the corporate world's many simple, yet menial tasks. Writer provides more than 70 pre-generated apps and agents that clients can use immediately—but it doesn't come cheap, as annual costs can reach into the millions. "People don't have to do the work," says Habib. "They only have to build AI that does it for them."
